Chapter 20
I wake up on Monday with a smile on my face and bounce through my morning routine. Itâs a rare sunny day in Seattle, and I feel as if itâs just for me. I blast the radio on the way to the hospital, singing at the top of my lungsâI know I look silly, but I couldnât care less because Iâm happy.
As I approach the nursesâ station, Jennyâs eyebrows rise as her jaw drops.
âWow! What happened to you?â
âHe kissed me.â
Jenny squeals excitedly. âI just knew that would happen this weekend! Was it only once?â
âNo, it was more than once.â
âOkay, spill,â she orders, grabbing my arm and shepherding me to the nursesâ lounge. âIâve been waiting weeks for this. I canât possibly wait until lunchtime.â
I laugh at her eagerness, and to my surprise, I end up telling her everything as if we were in high school. She oohs and ahs in all the right places, and by the time I reach the end, sheâs grinning from ear to ear.
âI told you he had feelings for you!â she says, whacking me on the arm.
âYes, you told me so. Are you happy now?â
âIâm completely happy, and so are you!â She gushes, almost knocking me over with a hug.
âYes, I am happy. I donât know what the future holds, but Iâm so glad I decided to just let things happen.â
âIâm glad you did too. But I wasnât sure things would turn out this way even if you did make that decision. I thought there was a chance Will would pull away at the last minute. Heâs so set in his ways about certain things, and this wasnât part of his plan.â
âWell, I did have to reassure him more than once that this was what I wanted too, and I encouraged him to let go and enjoy himself. And although Iâm thrilled about it, his pulling me closer kind of worries me. He was so bound and determined not to. The change makes me nervous about his emotional stability. I donât want to be the reason he falls apart even though I think, in some ways, it might be good for him.â
âIâm sure heâll be all right; heâs tough,â Jenny says, patting my arm. âSpeaking of Will, shouldnât you be waking him up about now? Itâs almost eight-thirty.â
âJeez, youâre right! I have a nine oâclock, so I need to get moving!â
I push Willâs door open slowly, and Iâm met with whatâs become my very favorite sight in the whole world: Will sleeping peacefully. He is utterly still this morningâa hopeful sign that he might have yet another good day. I walk right over to his bed, but I indulge myself in a few minutes of staring at his beautiful face and morning-wild hair before I finally reach up to push a few strands back from his forehead.
âGood morning, sweetheart,â I whisper.
Will pulls his head away a little, scrunching up his face in a wince as his arm curls unconsciously over his belly. I scowl, hating that every move he makes causes him pain even in sleep.
